長男が「宗教ってさぁ…」と色々と質問を始めました。

ここは大事なところと思い、きちんと言葉にしようと試みます。

今年の5月は、昨年よりもいくらか涼しく感じませんか？
そもそも、沼津や岡宮の近辺は特に、緑や土による恩恵を大いに受け、寒暖過ごしやすい環境にあるように思います。

さて、海外旅行などへ行く際、名前やもろもろの情報を記入する欄があり、そこに【宗教】の枠もあります。
世界的には８割の人が信仰している【宗教】は、住所や生年月日と同じくらい、個人の信用に値するものなのです。

日本で使われて久しい、しかし世界から見るとまるで不思議なことば「無宗教」。

我々南無妙法蓮華経の宗教とは、信仰とはどういうものなのか、これを考えてみたいと思うのです。

南無妙法蓮華経宗　＝　法華宗

　日本の有名な仏教各派と少し比べてみましょう。

　禅宗系。修行をしたり工夫をしたりして、自分が悟りを得ることを目標とします。悟ることができれば、成仏です。

　浄土宗系。文字通り、浄土へ行くことを目標とします。浄土に行ければ、これは成仏ですから、行けるように阿弥陀さんにお願いをします。

　真言とか密教という部類の宗派は、修行を積み、あるいは特別なことをすることで、この身体のまま、いわゆる人間のまま、成仏を目指します。

　他、一神教のキリスト教などもありますが、割愛します。

　さて、我々法華宗はどうでしょう。

　そもそも、成仏を目指してお題目を唱えていますよ、という方、あんまりいないような気がするんですよね。
　どちらかというと、「誰かのため」とか「善い行いをするため」という意識のほうが強い気がする。
　
　もちろん、他の宗派の方でもこう考える方はたくさんいらっしゃるはず。でもそうなると、元々の教えとは少しズレている、ということになりますね。

　この南無妙法蓮華経の教えは、「お経を唱えることで、この世、今の環境ごと良くしようよ、浄土にしようよ」というもの。知らない人には聞かせ、聞こえない人には太鼓の振動を使ってでも、動物にも植物にも南無妙法蓮華経を届けようよ、なんです。
　だから、結果的に成仏させていただけるのだけれど、成仏を目指しているか、というと、それをめちゃくちゃ意識しているわけ、ではない。

　どちらかといえば、嫁いだ先がそうだった。近所の人が、おばあちゃんが、そんな入りの人が多いはずです。根っこや始まりから考えると、誰かが、「子どもや愛する人の生きていく世界が、どうか良い環境、健やかな世界（浄土）でありますように」と願い、広げ、つないできたのが南無妙法蓮華経なんです。

　根っこからのズレがない。それは、緑や土地と一緒。まさに恩恵、です。

　我々はそういう【宗教】を信じているんだよ、と、子どもたちにきちんと伝えることが出来たら…

　今の日本の中で定着しつつある、マイナスな意味での【それって宗教っぽいよね】ということばが丸ごと、幸せで感動的なものに変わるはずです。
　宗教とは先人の思いやり。

＃63 Religion?

My oldest son started asking a lot of questions, saying, “You know, religion…”
I thought this was an important point, so I tried to put it into words properly.

Doesn’t it feel a little cooler this May than last?

In the first place, I think that the areas around Numazu and Okamiya in particular benefit greatly from the greenery and soil, making it a comfortable environment to live in regardless of temperature.

Now, when you go on an overseas trip, there is a section where you fill in your name and other information, and there is also a box for [religion].

[Religion], which 80% of people around the world believe in, is as trustworthy as your address or date of birth.

“Non-religious” is a word that has been used in Japan for a long time, but seems strange to the rest of the world.

I would like to think about what religion and faith we who believe in Namu Myoho Renge Kyo are.
Namu Myoho Renge Kyo Sect = Hokke Sect

Let’s compare it with the famous Buddhist sects in Japan.
First, there is the Zen sect. Their goal is to attain enlightenment through training and ingenuity. If they can attain enlightenment, they will attain Buddhahood.
Next is the Jodo sect. Their goal is, as the saying goes, to the Pure Land. If they can reach the Pure Land, they will attain Buddhahood, so they pray to Amida Buddha to help them get there.
In sects such as Shingon and Esoteric Buddhism, people aim to attain Buddhahood in this body, while remaining human, by undergoing training or doing special things.
There are also other monotheistic sects such as Christianity, but we will leave that out.

So, what about our Nichiren sect?
To begin with, I don’t think there are many people who chant the daimoku in the hope of attaining Buddhahood.
If anything, I feel there is a stronger awareness of “for someone” or “to do a good deed.” Of course, there must be many people in other sects who think this way as well.
But if that’s the case, it means that it’s a bit of a deviation from the original teachings.
The teaching of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo is, “Let’s make this world, the environment, better by chanting the sutra, and make it a Pure Land.” Let’s deliver Namu Myoho Renge Kyo to animals and plants, even if it means letting those who don’t know hear it hear it, and using the vibrations of drums for those who can’t hear it.
So, ultimately, we are able to attain enlightenment, but it’s not like we’re aiming for enlightenment, and we’re overly conscious of it.
If anything, that’s what happened to my husband’s family. I’m sure there are many people in my neighborhood, my grandmother, who have been like that.
If you think about the roots and beginnings, someone wished, “May the world in which our children and loved ones live be a good environment, a healthy world (Pure Land),” and Namu Myoho Renge Kyo has spread and connected.

There is no deviation from the roots. It’s the same as greenery and land. It’s truly a blessing.

If we can properly convey to children that we believe in this kind of “religion”…
The negative meaning of the phrase “that sounds religious” that is becoming established in Japan today should be completely transformed into something happy and moving. Religion is the compassion of our ancestors.
